Museums connecting history

More knowledge on the history of cross-border contacts, pomor trade history and partisan´s efforts during WWII are important areas of focus for the new cooperation agreement between Varanger Museum and Arkhangelsk Museum of Regional History. 

The cooperation agreement between Arkhangelsk museum of regional history “Gostinij Dvor” and Varanger museum was signed in Arkhangelsk on Tuesday. 

Restoring historical links
- We are happy to restore our cooperation between our two institutions which are based on long term historical links between Arkhangelsk and Finnmark, said Frans-Arne Stylegar who is director of Varanger museum.

Varanger museum is owned by three municipalities of Eastern Finnmark: Sør-Varanger, Vardø and Vadsø. It includes several local museums with special focus om the history of cross-border contacts, Pomor trade history, Partisans history during WWII and other aspects.

Natalia Shpanova, director of Gostinij Dvor museum stressed that cooperation between Russian and Norwegian museums enriches common knowledge about the North.

Action plan
-It is important to note that we agreed with our Norwegian colleagues that we will not limit only with this framework agreement. We are going to make a common action plan which will be specified once a year, she said.

Arkhangelsk museum of regional history Gostinij Dvor is the oldest and the largest in the Arkhangelsk oblast. It operates with the one of the richest collection of historical artefacts and monuments from ancient age to the Soviet period.
