Barents Monitoring: 2008 in figures

After years of growth and positive social-economic development, the Russian federal subjects in the Barents Region in 2008 faced the perspectives of a serious economic downturn. See 2008 economic results in Arkhangelsk Oblast, Murmansk Oblast and the Nenets in our Barents Monitoring report.

Both Murmansk, Arkhangelsk and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug late last year seriously started to feel the downturn in Russian economy. For the first time since 1998, the industrial production in Murmansk had negative growth. In Arkhangelsk, the powerful forestry industry was set back ten years in turnover. In the small but oil-rich Nenets AO, there was a sharp decline in investments.

However, the three Russian regions also experienced a number of positive developments.

The Barents Monitoring reports are written by the Russian offices of the Norwegian Barents Secretariat based on figures from the regional statistics services. In addition to annual reports, the Barents Monitoring also includes quarterly reports for the Russian federal subjects in the region.

The Barents Monitoring initiative was started in 2009.
